In Home Family Photoshoot

Taking family photos in your home is becoming more and more popular. This blog post is all about how to have a successful and stress-free family photoshoot in your home. I’m going to break down all the recommendations and give you my top reasons why an in-home family photoshoot feels so special. If you’ve never done a family photoshoot in home and you’re debating if it’s the right choice this time around, I hope this post will help you decide.

Benefits for an In Home Family Photoshoot

  1. One of the top benefits for in home family photos is: no travel. The photographer comes straight to you. So, right away you don’t have to worry about peak traffic for golden hour, or planning that extra time in the car to get to your destination. Plus, you have bathrooms, snacks, toys and all the things readily available to keep everyone content for the duration of your in home family photoshoot.

  2. No Crowds: another key benefit to doing a family photoshoot in your home is you have the whole place to yourself. Often, popular outdoor locations get crowded and everyone is fighting for the best spot during that magical hour before the sun goes down.

  3. More Flexible Timing: with indoor family photos, there is a little more wiggle room for the time of day they can be taken. A good photographer will gravitate towards the natural light sources in your home, making mid-late morning and mid-afternoon the best times to shoot. These times also make shooting family photos inside your home an easy weekend convenience. We all know the weekdays get packed and hectic, this allows for some stress free family photos during an open weekend.

  4. Let’s face it- we live in the desert! And it gets HOT. Trying to plan family photos in the summer months can de a little daunting with the heat exposure. Plus, nobody likes sweating when you’re trying to look your best and relax. Opting for an in home family photoshoot during the summer elevates any stress of being out in the heat. We get to enjoy the cool in-doors with the air conditioning!

How to Prepare for a Family Photoshoot in your Home

Here are my top 5 tips for your in home family photo session-

  • The first thing I always recommend for taking family photos in your home is to tidy up. By no means does this mean hire a professional cleaner and deep dive into de-clutter mode (unless you want to). Remember, I’m all about keeping family photos as stress-free as possible. You will want your in home family photos to reflect all the best parts of your house and how you authentically use those spaces. Highlight these areas in a way that feels beautiful and clean to you.

  1. Have Indoor family photoshoot ideas planned in advance. I want you to think about the places in your home that matter most, where everyone gathers, and we will use those to highlight your photos. This really lends itself to in home family lifestyle photography. It feels candid and real which makes for the absolute best photos! Some at home family photoshoot ideas to think about beforehand are: does anyone play an instrument? Who loves to bake in the kitchen? Can we gather outside under the shade of your biggest tree? Let’s squeeze the whole family on your comfiest couch. Bring out the most loved lovies for the littles to snuggle while you snuggle them. These are just a few to get the ball rolling for your in home family photoshoot ideas.

  2. Invite extended family. An extended family photoshoot in your home is a great way to gather the generations and document everyone in a cozy space. Grandparents often like the comforts of sitting down. In home family photos allow them to move fluidly throughout the home with grandkids bouncing off their lap and big hugs around the neck.

  3. Styling matters for in home family photography as well. In fact, I think it matters more than outdoor photoshoots. Since there are a lot of varying colors and light shades and decorations inside the home, I recommend very simple neutrals for what to wear for your family photoshoot. Think neutral earth tones- whites, creams, sand and caramel colors with some grey thrown in. If you want color, keep it in really rich, deep earth tones. Deep emerald greens and warm ocean blues. Textures really bring things to life like chunky knits and thick linens. When planning what to wear for a family photoshoot, always error on the side of simple vs busy. Keep in mind each photographer will differ depending on how they shoot and how they edit.

  4. Make sure to get some special photos of you and your partner alone during your in home family photoshoot. Think about ending the shoot with some deep breaths, an intimate spot and a quick love squeeze for just you and your partner. This is where having a family lifestyle photoshoot in your home comes in handy- snacks to distract the kids for 5 minutes! Snack each other in and think about the beauty of what you have created together. It’s important and its magical and its hard work and its worth it.
